Trade Deadline MADNESS Recap 🤯↔️

Breaking down every trade from the crazy MLB Trade Deadline.

Whew, that was CRAZY. This is my fourth season now covering the trade deadline with Just Baseball, and I can say with confidence that this was the most chaotic one.

First and foremost, I want to give a huge shoutout to our social media team. We have an incredible team of talented and passionate baseball lovers, who I feel truly grateful to work alongside!

This is one of our biggest days of the season and we hope you all enjoyed following along this week. You can relive the craziness of the deadline by checking out our live stream or listen to today’s Just Baseball Show for a recap of all the big deals.

Let’s take a shot at recapping all of the happenings from the past week and, as always, you can read in-depth articles on every big deal on Justbaseball.com.

Recapping Every Trade

We may miss a couple here, so don’t come for me! But let’s look at all of the major deals from earlier this week and the insane last couple hours leading up to the deadline.

Every trade with a corresponding article is linked for you to read more, and the other ones will either have a piece out soon or you can drop angry comments about we didn’t do in-depth coverage of a minor trade your team made. Ball is in your court!

Prior to Deadline

Mariners get their first bat in Josh Naylor. Seattle was active in addressing their lack of lineup depth and got their first bat from Arizona, sending two pitching prospects to the desert for Josh Naylor.

Yankees get ahead of market, acquire Ryan McMahon. New York was one of a few teams clearly in the market for a 3B, so they acted early and made this deal with the Rockies. The Yankees traded a pair of 22-year-old pitching prospects, headlined by 2024 sixth-round pick Griffin Herring.

Mets add first arm of the week. New York was active filling gaps this week and they started by acquiring reliever Gregory Soto from the Orioles for two players, headlined by 20-year-old pitcher Wellington Aracena.

Yankees bolster infield depth with Amed Rosario. After acquiring McMahon, the Yankees got the weak-side of a new platoon. They sent reliever Clayton Beeter and a prospect to the Nationals.

Royals add veteran outfielder Randal Grichuk. In what was somewhat of a “soft buy” for Kansas City, they added a piece to their weak outfield.

Tigers deepened their pitching staff with Chris Paddack. Detroit has struggled of late after such a dominant first few months. They didn’t add a huge arm, but Chris Paddack made a great first impression.

Brewers acquire depth behind the dish with Danny Jansen. While William Contreras is the guy behind the plate for them, Milwaukee brought in a vet to back him up.

Toronto starts to improve with Seranthony Dominguez. The Blue Jays are running the AL East right now and started their active week by bringing in a veteran reliever in exchange for pitching prospect Juaron Watts-Brown.

Uptick the Day Before

Reds take a chance on Ke’Bryan Hayes’ upside. Rumored to be a player Pittsburgh wanted gone, Hayes was dealt in-division to the Reds for Taylor Rogers and prospect Sammy Stafura.

Mets continue bullpen improvement with Tyler Rogers trade. It was never going to be just a move or two for New York, who is firmly contending. They traded two of their top 15 prospects in this deal to get Rogers, who has been incredible for San Francisco this year.

Phillies win battle for star closer Jhoan Duran and Mets match with Ryan Helsley. Our first flash newsletter (which I hope you enjoyed…) dropped Wednesday afternoon when the NL East leaders matched each other by adding elite closers. The Twins got back our #63 prospect in Eduardo Tait along with RHP Mick Abel for Duran while the Cardinals got a trio of solid prospects for Helsley.

Yankees add a platoon bat in Austin Slater. Despite modest numbers overall, Slater mashes lefties and will hopefully do such for the Yankees after they acquired him for pitching prospect Gage Ziehl.

Angels bring in two veteran relievers…because they’re the Angels. While they didn’t truly buy, the Halos added a pair of relievers nearing the end of their careers in Andrew Chafin and Luis Garcia.

Reds get an underrated starter in Zack Littell. Cincinnati seemed like they wanted to add rather than subtract and they did to a less degree than most. Littell will add some depth to their rotation. But did they do enough?

Mariners reunite with Eugenio Suarez. Seattle is ready to compete in the American League after adding a familiar face who was easily the top rental bat on the market. It helps that he has also already hit 36 home runs this season. They did so without trading an of their MLB-best SEVEN Top 100 prospects. Tyler Locklear is the headliner for Arizona and he’ll immediately slot into everyday first baseman role for them.

Early Day Deals

Blue Jays take an upside swing with Shane Bieber. Leading the AL East, Toronto is making a push and attacked the deadline in a unique way. Bieber, an ace-caliber arm when healthy, has yet to make a start this season while recovering from surgery but has looked sharp in rehab games. This is a risk for Toronto especially given that they traded our #89 prospect Khal Stephen.

Padres shock the world by acquiring Mason Miller for a package including Leo De Vries. The biggest deal of the deadline sent Miller and JP Sears to the Padres for a stacked package of talented prospects headlined by our #7 prospect in baseball.

Tigers further improve bullpen. Detroit brought in another arm to add depth to their roster in Kyle Finnegan, but didn’t end up going for a big splash.

Phillies fill out the outfield with Harrison Bader. This team went all the way acquiring Duran and filling another potential hole with a veteran outfielder who has been solid this year.

Dodgers trade for lesser-known bullpen arm. They added Brock Stewart from the Twins for a package including former standout James Outman.

Yankees further boost elite bullpen with David Bednar and Jake Bird. This bullpen is extremely deep now with Bednar, as they brought him in from Pittsburgh for a trio of prospects. They also acquired Bird from Colorado for a pair of prospects.

Padres get their catcher. San Diego has had very poor catcher production this year, so they got Freddy Fermin from the Royals for two pitchers.

Mets match Phillies again with a new outfielder. New York was known to be in market for an outfielder, like their rival, and got Cedric Mullins from Baltimore for a trio of prospects.

Astros reunite with franchise legend Carlos Correa. WOW! This one may have been the shock of the deadline with Correa heading back to the organization that drafted and developed him. They also picked up outfielder Jesus Sanchez from Miami.

Last Minute Madness

Padres make lineup elite with Ryan O’Hearn and Ramon Laureano. Once they acquired Miller, we knew AJ Preller was not done. He got two guys having career-years to fill out an awesome lineup. They did trade SIX prospects to make it happen, though.

Dodgers trade for Alex Call. While he isn’t a huge name, Call has been good this year and the Dodgers parted with two of their top 20 prospects to bring him over.

Rangers make baseball’s best rotation even better. While this team didn’t really need arms, they got a good veteran one in Merrill Kelly for three prospects.

Red Sox trade for Dustin May. Once considered a top-end arm, May has finally been healthy, but hasn’t been great this year. It cost Boston prospect James Tibbs, who they just acquired for Devers.

Royals get Bailey Falter, Padres get Nestor Cortes, Rays get Adrian Houser, Rangers get Phil Maton, Yankees get Jose Caballero, Tigers get Charlie Morton. Too many depth adds to go into detail on! Let me tell you…our graphics king Brandon Anderson was hustling.

Yankees make one last splash with Camilo Doval. They just kept on improving the pen with another big add in exchange for four prospects.

Rays surprise by buying reliever Griffin Jax. They traded Taj Bradley to Minnesota for Jax, who has been one of the best setup relievers in baseball over the past few years.

Blue Jays find another leverage arm in Louis Varland. Toronto kept it rolling, adding Varland and Ty France, but did have to trade our #91 prospect Kendry Rojas to get it done.
