Early Season Prospect Standouts 👀

The Minor League Baseball season is off and running as we review some early top prospect performers.

The Minor League Baseball season has kicked off at every level except the complex now, so our prospects newsletter is back and better than ever!

While it’s only been a handful of games, we’ll highlight a number of top prospects off to a good start in addition to prospects who have received an early call up from their Major League club this spring.

Prospect Standouts

We’re less than two weeks into the Triple-A season and only three games into year for the other minor league levels, so it’s certainly too early to make significant assessments on prospects.

It’s never too early though to shine some light on impressive performances! We’ll hold off on any players struggling out of the gate, but plenty of top prospects have already shown signs of growth or continued success from last season.

Many of these players will be Triple-A prospects, but a number of top prospects at a lower level had an awesome first weekend even in a limited sample.

Hitters

Nick Kurtz (JB #48) is going to be in Oakland soon. The fourth overall pick in the 2024 draft has done nothing but mash since being drafted and that has continued into his first stint of Triple-A ball. Oakland is going to have to figure out their 1B/DH logjam soon because Kurtz may just force their hand soon.

Dalton Rushing (JB #10) and Zyhir Hope (JB #8) come out strong. This pair of top 10 MLB prospects for us (despite plenty of angry pushback) has looked the part to start year. Rushing posted a .993 OPS in his first eight Triple-A games while Hope hit a home run 111 MPH off the bat, flashing his top-end power upside.

Travis Bazzana (JB #14) is ready for Double-A. In his first weekend at the next level of the minors, Bazzana was exceptional with seven hits including a home run across his first three games. He flashed all the tools and the top pick in last year’s draft could viably debut in Cleveland later this summer.

Jac Caglianone (JB #29) destroys baseballs. He showed this weekend that he may not need long in Double-A, going 5-13 with this mammoth of a homer highlighting his first weekend at the Double-A level.

Edgar Quero (JB #49) and Kyle Teel (JB #55) should be catching in Chicago. The White Sox have two of the best catching prospects in baseball and neither really have much left to prove in Triple-A. Quero has gotten on base in half of his plate appearances to open the season while Teel has flashed more power with four XBH already for Charlotte.

Max Clark (JB #44) flashes approach and pop. After finishing 2024 at High-A, Clark returns for a second stint and looked the part. He went deep this weekend and walked six times in his first three games of the season.

Pitchers

Jacob Misiorowski (JB #82) looks like a legit starter. Despite many seeing him transitioning to a high-leverage reliever soon, Misiorowski has been stellar in his first two games of the season. Granted one outing was out of the bullpen, but he still went nearly four innings. He has struck out 11 while allowing just one hit so far in Triple-A.

Jurrangelo Cijntje (JB Mariners #7) shows off switch-pitching excellence. The notorious switch-pitcher taken in the first round by the Mariners last year was unreal in his first professional start. He topped at nearly 100 MPH while striking out six across his four inning MiLB debut.

Jarlin Susana hype train continues to gain steam. He was a big riser in our Top 100 over the past year and showed just why in his first start of the 2025 season. He struck out 7 while registering 12 whiffs and topping at 102.3 MPH across just four innings in his first career start in Double-A.

Hagen Smith proves he’s ready to dominate Double-A. In his first start at the level and just fourth pro start, Smith struck out 10 batters across four innings. He uncharacteristically walked four, but did not allow a hit and generated a ton of whiffs. He’ll spend most of the year in Double-A likely as he prepares to be an impact arm in Chicago next season.

Early Season Call Ups

It may seem odd to promote prospects who didn’t make the Opening Day roster this early in the season, but some potential future stars are getting a chance quickly this spring.

One reason for certain promotions could be that Top 100 prospects have to be on the active MLB roster for 172 days, there are 187 in the MLB season, to be eligible for a Prospect Promotion Incentive draft pick.

In other cases, some prospects have just impressed enough between Spring Training and a number of MiLB games to warrant a spot on the team.

Here are some of the players that have been promoted to MLB for the first time:

Here are some of the prospects who have already debuted briefly but were recalled by their MLB team:

  • RHP Caden Dana (LAA)

  • Justyn-Henry Malloy (DET)

  • Thomas Saggese (STL)
