Key Storylines to Follow
Texas A&M begins the season ranked as the No. 1 team: Texas A&M begins the 2025 season as the No. 1 ranked team after reaching the College World Series finals last year. Despite losing several players to the portal following Jim Schlossnagle’s departure, new head coach Mike Earley reloaded the roster, retaining stars like Jace LaViolette, a potential first-overall MLB Draft pick, and adding Big 12 Player of the Year Gavin Kash. With one of the nation’s best lineups and a strong pitching staff led by ace Ryan Prager, the Aggies are poised as serious contenders for the national title.
Tennessee will look to repeat as CWS Champs: The Tennessee Volunteers enter 2025 as the No. 2 team in college baseball, aiming to defend their College World Series title. While there are some uncertainties in the rotation, standout AJ Russell could make an impact midseason, alongside key arms like Liam Doyle and Nate Snead. The lineup is stacked, led by Dean Curley, a top-10 MLB Draft prospect, and bolstered by transfers Gavin Kilen and Andrew Fischer, keeping Tennessee a strong contender for another championship run.
New look conferences (ACC, BIG10, Big12) will provide for some complicated schedules: There was a ton of conference shuffling with the PAC-12 mostly dissolving. Cal and Stanford joined the ACC Conference, Oregon, UCLA, USC, and Washington joined the Big Ten Conference, and Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah joined the Big 12 Conference. Many teams will have to take long trips from the west coast to the east coast and vice versa. For example, Oregon has an 11 AM game on a Monday against Georgetown after playing a weekend series against conference foe Maryland. How teams deal with these long flights and wonky schedules will be interesting.
The battle for the top pitcher in college baseball will be fun: The battle for the top pitcher in college baseball will be a season-long showdown between Florida State’s Jamie Arnold and UCSB’s Tyler Bremner, the No. 2 and No. 3 college prospects for the 2025 MLB Draft. Arnold, who struck out 159 in 105.2 innings with a 2.98 ERA, continued to dominate for the USA Collegiate National Team. Bremner, the top mid-major arm, posted an 11-1 record with a 2.74 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 88 innings. Both are poised to compete for National Pitcher of the Year honors.
